80. Surah 'Abasa He frowned

  • بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّح۪يمِ

    Bismi Allahi arrahmani arraheem

    In the name of Allah, All-Merciful, Most Merciful

  • 1.

    عَبَسَ وَتَوَلّٰىۙ

    AAabasa watawalla

    He frowned and turned away

  • 2.

    اَنْ جَٓاءَهُ الْاَعْمٰىۜ

    An jaahu al-aAAma

    because the blind man came to him.

  • 3.

    وَمَا يُدْر۪يكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكّٰىۙ

    Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka

    But how do you know? Perhaps he would be purified

  • 4.

    اَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنْفَعَهُ الذِّكْرٰىۜ

    Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu aththikra

    or reminded, and the reminder benefit him.

  • 5.

    اَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنٰىۙ

    Amma mani istaghna

    As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient,

  • 6.

    فَاَنْتَ لَهُ تَصَدّٰىۜ

    Faanta lahu tasadda

    you give him your complete attention,

  • 7.

    وَمَا عَلَيْكَ اَلَّا يَزَّكّٰىۜ

    Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka

    but it is not up to you whether or not he is purified.

  • 8.

    وَاَمَّا مَنْ جَٓاءَكَ يَسْعٰىۙ

    Waamma man jaaka yasAAa

    But as for him who comes to you eagerly

  • 9.

    وَهُوَ يَخْشٰىۙ

    Wahuwa yakhsha

    showing fearfulness,

  • 10.

    فَاَنْتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهّٰىۚ

    Faanta AAanhu talahha

    from him you are distracted.

  • 11.

    كَلَّٓا اِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌۚ

    Kalla innaha tathkira

    No indeed! Truly it is a reminder,

  • 12.

    فَمَنْ شَٓاءَ ذَكَرَهُۢ

    Faman shaa thakarah

    and whoever wills pays heed to it.

  • 13.

    ف۪ي صُحُفٍ مُكَرَّمَةٍۙ

    Fee suhufin mukarrama

    Inscribed on Honoured Pages,

  • 14.

    مَرْفُوعَةٍ مُطَهَّرَةٍۙ

    MarfooAAatin mutahhara

    exalted, purified

  • 15.

    بِاَيْد۪ي سَفَرَةٍۙ

    Bi-aydee safara

    by the hands of scribes,

  • 16.

    كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍۜ

    Kiramin barara

    noble, virtuous.

  • 17.

    قُتِلَ الْاِنْسَانُ مَٓا اَكْفَرَهُۜ

    Qutila al-insanu ma akfarah

    Curse man for his ingratitude!

  • 18.

    مِنْ اَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُۜ

    Min ayyi shay-in khalaqah

    From what thing did He create him?

  • 19.

    مِنْ نُطْفَةٍۜ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُۙ

    Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarah

    From a drop of sperm He created him and proportioned him.

  • 20.

    ثُمَّ السَّب۪يلَ يَسَّرَهُۙ

    Thumma assabeela yassarah

    Then He eases the way for him.

  • 21.

    ثُمَّ اَمَاتَهُ فَاَقْبَرَهُۙ

    Thumma amatahu faaqbarah

    Then He causes him to die and buries him.

  • 22.

    ثُمَّ اِذَا شَٓاءَ اَنْشَرَهُۜ

    Thumma itha shaa ansharah

    Then, when He wills, He raises him from the dead.

  • 23.

    كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَٓا اَمَرَهُۜ

    Kalla lamma yaqdi maamarah

    No indeed! He has not done what He ordered him.

  • 24.

    فَلْيَنْظُرِ الْاِنْسَانُ اِلٰى طَعَامِه۪ۙ

    Falyanthuri al-insanuila taAAamih

    Man has only to look at his food.

  • 25.

    اَنَّا صَبَبْنَا الْمَٓاءَ صَباًّۙ

    Anna sababna almaasabba

    We pour down plentiful water,

  • 26.

    ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الْاَرْضَ شَقاًّۙ

    Thumma shaqaqna al-arda shaqqa

    then split the earth into furrows.

  • 27.

    فَاَنْبَتْنَا ف۪يهَا حَباًّۙ

    Faanbatna feeha habba

    Then We make grain grow in it,

  • 28.

    وَعِنَباً وَقَضْباًۙ

    WaAAinaban waqadba

    and grapes and herbs

  • 29.

    وَزَيْتُوناً وَنَخْلاًۙ

    Wazaytoonan wanakhla

    and olives and dates

  • 30.

    وَحَدَٓائِقَ غُلْباًۙ

    Wahada-iqa ghulba

    and luxuriant gardens

  • 31.

    وَفَاكِهَةً وَاَباًّۙ

    Wafakihatan waabba

    and orchards and meadows,

  • 32.

    مَتَاعاً لَكُمْ وَلِاَنْعَامِكُمْۜ

    MataAAan lakum wali-anAAamikum

    for you and your livestock to enjoy.

  • 33.

    فَاِذَا جَٓاءَتِ الصَّٓاخَّةُۘ

    Fa-itha jaati assakhkha

    When the Deafening Blast comes,

  • 34.

    يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ اَخ۪يهِۙ

    Yawma yafirru almaro min akheeh

    the Day a man will flee from his brother

  • 35.

    وَاُمِّه۪ وَاَب۪يهِۙ

    Waommihi waabeeh

    and his mother and his father,

  • 36.

    وَصَاحِبَتِه۪ وَبَن۪يهِۜ

    Wasahibatihi wabaneeh

    and his wife and his children:

  • 37.

    لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْن۪يهِۜ

    Likulli imri-in minhum yawma-ithinsha/nun yughneeh

    on that Day every man among them will have concerns enough of his own.

  • 38.

    وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُسْفِرَةٌۙ

    Wujoohun yawma-ithin musfira

    That Day some faces will be radiant,

  • 39.

    ضَاحِكَةٌ مُسْتَبْشِرَةٌۚ

    Dahikatun mustabshira

    laughing, rejoicing.

  • 40.

    وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌۙ

    Wawujoohun yawma-ithin AAalayhaghabara

    That Day some faces will be dust-covered,

  • 41.

    تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌۜ

    Tarhaquha qatara

    overcast with gloom.

  • 42.

    اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ هُـمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ

    Ola-ika humu alkafaratu alfajara

    Those are the dissolute kafirun.
