← 74. Al-Muddaththir | 76. Al-Insan →

    Bismi Allahi arrahmani arraheem

In the name of Allah, All-Merciful, Most Merciful

  • 1.

    La oqsimu biyawmi alqiyamat

No! I swear by the Day of Rising!

  • 2.

    Wala oqsimu binnafsi allawwamat

No! I swear by the self-reproaching self.

  • 3.

    Ayahsabu al-insanu allannajmaAAa AAithamah

Does man imagine We will not reassemble his bones?

  • 4.

    Bala qadireena AAala annusawwiya bananah

On the contrary! We are well able to reshape his fingers.

  • 5.

    Bal yureedu al-insanu liyafjura amamah

Yet man still wants to deny what is ahead of him,

  • 6.

    Yas-alu ayyana yawmu alqiyama

asking, ‘So when is the Day of Rising?’

  • 7.

    Fa-itha bariqa albasar

But when the eyesight is dazzled,

  • 8.

    Wakhasafa alqamar

    and the moon is eclipsed,

  • 9.

    WajumiAAa ashshamsu walqamar

and the sun and moon are fused together,

  • 10.

    Yaqoolu al-insanu yawma-ithinayna almafar

on that Day man will say, ‘Where can I run?’

  • 11.

    Kalla la wazar

No indeed! There will be no safe place.

  • 12.

    Ila rabbika yawma-ithinalmustaqar

That Day the only resting place will be your Lord.

  • 13.

    Yunabbao al-insanu yawma-ithinbima qaddama waakhkhar

That Day man will be told what he did and failed to do.

  • 14.

    Bali al-insanu AAala nafsihibaseera

In fact, man will be clear proof against himself

  • 15.

    Walaw alqa maAAatheerah

in spite of any excuses he might offer.

  • 16.

    La tuharrik bihi lisanakalitaAAjala bih

Do not move your tongue trying to hasten it.

  • 17.

    Inna AAalayna jamAAahu waqur-anah

Its collection and recitation are Our affair.

  • 18.

    Fa-itha qara/nahu fattabiAAqur-anah

So when We recite it, follow its recitation.

  • 19.

    Thumma inna AAalayna bayanah

Then its explanation is Our concern.

  • 20.

    Kalla bal tuhibboona alAAajila

No indeed! But you love this fleeting world

  • 21.

    Watatharoona al-akhira

and you disregard the Next World.

  • 22.

    Wujoohun yawma-ithin nadira

Faces that Day will be radiant,

  • 23.

    Ila rabbiha nathira

    gazing at their Lord.

  • 24.

    Wawujoohun yawma-ithin basira

And faces that Day will be glowering,

  • 25.

    Tathunnu an yufAAala bihafaqira

realising that a back-breaking blow has fallen.

  • 26.

    Kalla itha balaghati attaraqiy

No indeed! When it reaches the gullet

  • 27.

    Waqeela man raq

and he hears the words, ‘Who can heal him now?’

  • 28.

    Wathanna annahu alfiraq

and he knows it is indeed the final parting,

  • 29.

    Waltaffati assaqu bilssaq

and one leg is entwined with the other:

  • 30.

    Ila rabbika yawma-ithin almasaq

that Day he will be driven to your Lord.

  • 31.

    Fala saddaqa wala salla

He neither affirmed the truth nor did he do salat,

  • 32.

    Walakin kaththaba watawalla

but rather denied the truth and turned away.

  • 33.

    Thumma thahaba ila ahlihiyatamatta

and then went off to his family, swaggering.

  • 34.

    Awla laka faawla

It is coming closer to you and closer.

  • 35.

    Thumma awla laka faawla

Then closer to you and closer still.

  • 36.

    Ayahsabu al-insanu an yutrakasuda

Does man reckon he will be left to go on unchecked?

  • 37.

Alam yaku nutfatan min manayyin yumna

Was he not a drop of ejaculated sperm,

  • 38.

    Thumma kana AAalaqatan fakhalaqafasawwa

then a blood-clot which He created and shaped,

  • 39.

    FajaAAala minhu azzawjayni aththakarawal-ontha

making from it both sexes, male and female?

  • 40.

Alaysa thalika biqadirin AAalaan yuhyiya almawta

Is He who does this not able to bring the dead to life?
