44. Surah Ad-Dukhan The Smoke

  • بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّح۪يمِ

    Bismi Allahi arrahmani arraheem

    In the name of Allah, All-Merciful, Most Merciful

  • 1.

    حٰمٓۜ

    Ha-meem

    Ha Mim.

  • 2.

    وَالْكِتَابِ الْمُب۪ينِۙ

    Walkitabi almubeen

    By the Book which makes things clear.

  • 3.

    اِنَّٓا اَنْزَلْنَاهُ ف۪ي لَيْلَةٍ مُبَارَكَةٍ اِنَّا كُنَّا مُنْذِر۪ينَ

    Inna anzalnahu fee laylatin mubarakatininna kunna munthireen

    We sent it down on a blessed night; We are constantly giving warning.

  • 4.

    ف۪يهَا يُفْرَقُ كُـلُّ اَمْرٍ حَـك۪يمٍۜ

    Feeha yufraqu kullu amrin hakeem

    During it every wise decree is specified

  • 5.

    اَمْراً مِنْ عِنْدِنَاۜ اِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِل۪ينَۚ

    Amran min AAindina inna kunnamursileen

    by a command from Our presence. We are constantly sending out

  • 6.

    رَحْمَةً مِنْ رَبِّكَۜ اِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّم۪يعُ الْعَل۪يمُۙ

    Rahmatan min rabbika innahu huwa assameeAAualAAaleem

    as a mercy from your Lord. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing:

  • 7.

    رَبِّ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَاۢ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُوقِن۪ينَ

    Rabbi assamawati wal-ardiwama baynahuma in kuntum mooqineen

    the Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything in between them, if you are people with certainty.

  • 8.

    لَٓا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ يُحْـي۪ وَيُم۪يتُۜ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ اٰبَٓائِكُمُ الْاَوَّل۪ينَ

    La ilaha illa huwa yuhyeewayumeetu rabbukum warabbu aba-ikumu al-awwaleen

    There is no god but Him – He gives life and causes to die – your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers, the previous peoples.

  • 9.

    بَلْ هُمْ ف۪ي شَكٍّ يَلْعَبُونَ

    Bal hum fee shakkin yalAAaboon

    Yet they play around in doubt.

  • 10.

    فَارْتَقِبْ يَوْمَ تَأْتِي السَّمَٓاءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُب۪ينٍۙ

    Fartaqib yawma ta/tee assamaobidukhanin mubeen

    So be on the watch for a day when heaven brings forth a distinctive smoke,

  • 11.

    يَغْشَى النَّاسَۜ هٰذَا عَذَابٌ اَل۪يمٌ

    Yaghsha annasa hathaAAathabun aleem

    which enshrouds mankind. ‘This is a painful punishment!

  • 12.

    رَبَّـنَا اكْشِفْ عَنَّا الْعَذَابَ اِنَّا مُؤْمِنُونَ

    Rabbana ikshif AAanna alAAathabainna mu/minoon

    Our Lord, remove the punishment from us. We are really muminun.’

  • 13.

    اَنّٰى لَهُمُ الذِّكْرٰى وَقَدْ جَٓاءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ مُب۪ينٌۙ

    Anna lahumu aththikrawaqad jaahum rasoolun mubeen

    How can they expect a Reminder when a clear Messenger has already come to them?

  • 14.

    ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا مُعَلَّمٌ مَجْنُونٌۢ

    Thumma tawallaw AAanhu waqaloomuAAallamun majnoon

    But then they turned away from him and said, ‘He is an instructed madman!’

  • 15.

    اِنَّا كَاشِفُوا الْعَذَابِ قَل۪يلاً اِنَّكُمْ عَٓائِدُونَۢ

    Inna kashifoo alAAathabiqaleelan innakum AAa-idoon

    We remove the punishment a little, and you revert!

  • 16.

    يَوْمَ نَبْطِشُ الْبَطْشَةَ الْكُبْرٰىۚ اِنَّا مُنْتَقِمُونَ

    Yawma nabtishu albatshataalkubra inna muntaqimoon

    On the day We launch the Great Assault We will certainly take Our revenge.

  • 17.

    وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَجَٓاءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ كَر۪يمٌۙ

    Walaqad fatanna qablahum qawmafirAAawna wajaahum rasoolun kareem

    Before them We put Pharaoh’s people to the test when a noble Messenger came to them, saying

  • 18.

    اَنْ اَدُّٓوا اِلَيَّ عِبَادَ اللّٰهِۜ اِنّ۪ي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ اَم۪ينٌۙ

    An addoo ilayya AAibada Allahiinnee lakum rasoolun ameen

    ‘Hand over to me the slaves of Allah. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.’

  • 19.

    وَاَنْ لَا تَعْلُوا عَلَى اللّٰهِۚ اِنّ۪ٓي اٰت۪يكُمْ بِسُلْطَانٍ مُب۪ينٍۚ

    Waan la taAAloo AAala Allahiinnee ateekum bisultanin mubeen

    And: ‘Do not exalt yourselves above Allah. I come to you with clear authority.

  • 20.

    وَاِنّ۪ي عُذْتُ بِرَبّ۪ي وَرَبِّكُمْ اَنْ تَرْجُمُونِۘ

    Wa-innee AAuthtu birabbee warabbikuman tarjumoon

    I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me.

  • 21.

    وَاِنْ لَمْ تُؤْمِنُوا ل۪ي فَاعْتَزِلُونِ

    Wa-in lam tu/minoo lee faAAtaziloon

    If you do not have iman in me, then at least leave me alone. ’

  • 22.

    فَدَعَا رَبَّهُٓ اَنَّ هٰٓؤُ۬لَٓاءِ قَوْمٌ مُجْرِمُونَ

    FadaAAa rabbahu anna haola-iqawmun mujrimoon

    He called out to his Lord, ‘These are evildoing people. ’

  • 23.

    فَاَسْرِ بِعِبَاد۪ي لَيْلاً اِنَّكُمْ مُتَّبَعُونَۙ

    Faasri biAAibadee laylan innakummuttabaAAoon

    ‘Set out with My slaves by night. You will certainly be pursued.

  • 24.

    وَاتْرُكِ الْبَحْرَ رَهْواًۜ اِنَّهُمْ جُنْدٌ مُغْرَقُونَ

    Watruki albahra rahwaninnahum jundun mughraqoon

    Leave the sea divided as it is. They are an army who will be drowned.’

  • 25.

    كَمْ تَرَكُوا مِنْ جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍۙ

    Kam tarakoo min jannatin waAAuyoon

    How many gardens and fountains they left behind,

  • 26.

    وَزُرُوعٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَر۪يمٍۙ

    WazurooAAin wamaqamin kareem

    and ripe crops and noble residences.

  • 27.

    وَنَعْمَةٍ كَانُوا ف۪يهَا فَاكِه۪ينَۙ

    WanaAAmatin kanoo feeha fakiheen

    What comfort and ease they had delighted in!

  • 28.

    كَذٰلِكَ۠ وَاَوْرَثْنَاهَا قَوْماً اٰخَر۪ينَ

    Kathalika waawrathnahaqawman akhareen

    So it was. Yet We bequeathed these things to another people.

  • 29.

    فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّمَٓاءُ وَالْاَرْضُ وَمَا كَانُوا مُنْظَر۪ينَ۟

    Fama bakat AAalayhimu assamaowal-ardu wama kanoo munthareen

    Neither heaven nor earth shed any tears for them and they were granted no reprieve.

  • 30.

    وَلَقَدْ نَجَّيْنَا بَن۪ٓي اِسْرَٓائ۪لَ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ الْمُه۪ينِۙ

    Walaqad najjayna banee isra-eelamina alAAathabi almuheen

    We rescued the tribe of Israel from the humiliating punishment,

  • 31.

    مِنْ فِرْعَوْنَۜ اِنَّهُ كَانَ عَالِياً مِنَ الْمُسْرِف۪ينَ

    Min firAAawna innahu kana AAaliyanmina almusrifeen

    from Pharaoh – he was haughty, one of the profligate.

  • 32.

    وَلَقَدِ اخْتَرْنَاهُمْ عَلٰى عِلْمٍ عَلَى الْعَالَم۪ينَۚ

    Walaqadi ikhtarnahum AAalaAAilmin AAala alAAalameen

    We chose them knowingly above all other people

  • 33.

    وَاٰتَيْنَاهُمْ مِنَ الْاٰيَاتِ مَا ف۪يهِ بَلٰٓؤٌا مُب۪ينٌ

    Waataynahum mina al-ayatima feehi balaon mubeen

    and We gave them Signs containing a clear trial.

  • 34.

    اِنَّ هٰٓؤُ۬لَٓاءِ لَيَقُولُونَۙ

    Inna haola-i layaqooloon

    These people say,

  • 35.

    اِنْ هِيَ اِلَّا مَوْتَتُنَا الْاُو۫لٰى وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُنْشَر۪ينَ

    In hiya illa mawtatuna al-oolawama nahnu bimunshareen

    ‘There is nothing more than our first death. We will not be raised up a second time.

  • 36.

    فَأْتُوا بِاٰبَٓائِنَٓا اِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِق۪ينَ

    Fa/too bi-aba-ina inkuntum sadiqeen

    Bring us our fathers if you are telling the truth. ’

  • 37.

    اَهُمْ خَيْرٌ اَمْ قَوْمُ تُبَّعٍۙ وَالَّذ۪ينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْۜ اَهْلَكْنَاهُمْۘ اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا مُجْرِم۪ينَ

    Ahum khayrun am qawmu tubbaAAin wallatheenamin qablihim ahlaknahum innahum kanoo mujrimeen

    Are they better or the people of Tubba‘ and those before them whom We destroyed? They were certainly evildoers.

  • 38.

    وَمَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا لَاعِب۪ينَ

    Wama khalaqna assamawatiwal-arda wama baynahuma laAAibeen

    We did not create the heavens and the earth and everything between them as a game.

  • 39.

    مَا خَلَقْنَاهُمَٓا اِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلٰكِنَّ اَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

    Ma khalaqnahuma illabilhaqqi walakinna aktharahum layaAAlamoon

    We did not create them except with truth but most of them do not know it.

  • 40.

    اِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ م۪يقَاتُهُمْ اَجْمَع۪ينَۙ

    Inna yawma alfasli meeqatuhumajmaAAeen

    The Day of Decision will be their appointment all together:

  • 41.

    يَوْمَ لَا يُغْن۪ي مَوْلًى عَنْ مَوْلًى شَيْـٔاً وَلَا هُمْ يُنْصَرُونَۙ

    Yawma la yughnee mawlan AAan mawlanshay-an wala hum yunsaroon

    the Day when friends will be of no use at all to one another, and they will not be helped –

  • 42.

    اِلَّا مَنْ رَحِمَ اللّٰهُۜ اِنَّهُ هُوَ الْعَز۪يزُ الرَّح۪يمُ۟

    Illa man rahima Allahuinnahu huwa alAAazeezu arraheem

    except for those Allah has mercy on. He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful.

  • 43.

    اِنَّ شَجَرَتَ الزَّقُّومِۙ

    Inna shajarata azzaqqoom

    The Tree of az-Zaqqum

  • 44.

    طَعَامُ الْاَث۪يمِۚۛ

    TaAAamu al-atheem

    is the food of the wicked,

  • 45.

    كَالْمُهْلِۚۛ يَغْل۪ي فِي الْبُطُونِۙ

    Kalmuhli yaghlee fee albutoon

    seething in the belly like molten brass,

  • 46.

    كَغَلْيِ الْحَم۪يمِ

    Kaghalyi alhameem

    as boiling water bubbles and seethes.

  • 47.

    خُذُوهُ فَاعْتِلُوهُ اِلٰى سَوَٓاءِ الْجَح۪يمِۚ

    Khuthoohu faAAtiloohu ilasawa-i aljaheem

    ‘Seize him and drag him bodily into the middle of the Blazing Fire.

  • 48.

    ثُمَّ صُبُّوا فَوْقَ رَأْسِه۪ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْحَم۪يمِۜ

    Thumma subboo fawqa ra/sihi min AAathabialhameem

    Then pour the punishment of boiling water on his head. ’

  • 49.

    ذُقْۙ ۚ اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ الْعَز۪يزُ الْكَر۪يمُ

    Thuq innaka anta alAAazeezu alkareem

    ‘Taste that! You are the mighty one, the noble one!

  • 50.

    اِنَّ هٰذَا مَا كُنْتُمْ بِه۪ تَمْتَرُونَ

    Inna hatha ma kuntum bihitamtaroon

    This is the very thing you used to doubt. ’

  • 51.

    اِنَّ الْمُتَّق۪ينَ ف۪ي مَقَامٍ اَم۪ينٍۙ

    Inna almuttaqeena fee maqamin ameen

    The people who have taqwa will be in a safe place

  • 52.

    ف۪ي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍۚ

    Fee jannatin waAAuyoon

    amid gardens and fountains,

  • 53.

    يَلْبَسُونَ مِنْ سُنْدُسٍ وَاِسْتَبْرَقٍ مُتَقَابِل۪ينَۚ

    Yalbasoona min sundusin wa-istabraqin mutaqabileen

    wearing fine silk and rich brocade, face to face with one another.

  • 54.

    كَذٰلِكَ۠ وَزَوَّجْنَاهُمْ بِحُورٍ ع۪ينٍۜ

    Kathalika wazawwajnahum bihoorinAAeen

    So it will be. We will marry them to dark-eyed maidens.

  • 55.

    يَدْعُونَ ف۪يهَا بِكُلِّ فَاكِهَةٍ اٰمِن۪ينَۙ

    YadAAoona feeha bikulli fakihatinamineen

    They will call there for fruit of every kind, in complete security.

  • 56.

    لَا يَذُوقُونَ ف۪يهَا الْمَوْتَ اِلَّا الْمَوْتَةَ الْاُو۫لٰىۚ وَوَقٰيهُمْ عَذَابَ الْجَح۪يمِۙ

    La yathooqoona feehaalmawta illa almawtata al-oola wawaqahum AAathabaaljaheem

    They will not taste any death there – except for the first one. He will safeguard them from the punishment of the Blazing Fire.

  • 57.

    فَضْلاً مِنْ رَبِّكَۜ ذٰلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظ۪يمُ

    Fadlan min rabbika thalikahuwa alfawzu alAAatheem

    A favour from your Lord. That is the Great Victory.

  • 58.

    فَاِنَّمَا يَسَّرْنَاهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ

    Fa-innama yassarnahu bilisanikalaAAallahum yatathakkaroon

    We have made it easy in your own tongue so that hopefully they will pay heed.

  • 59.

    فَارْتَقِبْ اِنَّهُمْ مُرْتَقِبُونَ

    Fartaqib innahum murtaqiboon

    So watch and wait. They too are waiting.
