6. Surah Al-An'am, Verse 43

If only they had implored when Our punishment came to them; but their hearts hardened, and the devil adorned for them what they used to do.

But, instead of being humble when Our Requital touched them, their selfish desire led their minds into rationalizing their actions. This is because their hearts had been hardened with arrogance and repeated rejection of the Truth (2:74), (5:13).

Oh, that when Our disaster came upon them they had but humbled themselves! But their hearts hardened, and the satan made fair to them what they were doing.

If only they had implored when Our punishment came to them; but their hearts hardened, and the devil adorned for them what they used to do.

If only they had humbled themselves when Our violent force came upon them! However, their hearts were hard and Shaytan made what they were doing seem attractive to them.

If only they implored when our test afflicted them! Instead, their hearts were hardened, and the devil adorned their works in their eyes.

Then why did they not submit when Our punishment came upon them? But their hearts were hardened, and Satan made things they were doing look attractive to them.

Then why, when Our punishment came to them, did they not humble themselves? But their hearts became hardened, and Satan made attractive to them that which they were doing.

yet when the misfortune decreed by Us befell them, they did not humble themselves, but rather their hearts grew hard, for Satan had made all their doings seem goodly to them.

If only, when Our disaster came on them, they had been humble! But their hearts were hardened and the devil made all that they used to do seem fair unto them!

But even then and thus still, they became hard-hearted and were befooled by AL-Shaytan (Satan) who allured them to brighter worlds as a reward for their doings and he led the way.

How come [you may ask] they did not come to their senses when they were going through such disasters? Satan made their style of lives the most pleasing to them [as much as American way of life is the most pleasant to the Americans] up to the point that their inner conscious became insensitive to the truth.

When Our Torment reached them, why then did they not humble themselves (believe with humility)? But their hearts became hardened, and Shaitân (Satan) made fair-seeming to them that which they used to do.

When the suffering reached them from us, why then did they not learn humility? On the contrary their hearts became hardened, and Satan made their (sinful) acts seem alluring to them.

Why did they not humble themselves when We made them suffer? Instead, their hearts were hardened, and Satan made their misdeeds appealing to them.

Why then, did they not supplicate in humility when a calamity from Us came upon them? Instead, their hearts were hardened and Satan adorned for them what they were doing.

If only they had learned humility when suffering came from Us! But no, their hearts became hard and Satan made their foul deeds alluring to them.

if only, when Our might came upon them, they had been humble! But their hearts were hard, and Satan decked out fair to them what they were doing.

And do they not, when our violence falls upon them, humble themselves?- but their hearts were hard, and Satan made seemly to them that which they had done.

If only, when Our violence falls upon them, they had been humble, but their heart was hard, and Satan made seemly to them all that they used to do.

If (only) as Our violence came to them, they had supplicated! But their hearts hardened and Ash-Shaytan (The all-vicious, i. e., the Devil) adorned to them whatever they were doing.

Why, then, when Our punishment came upon them, did they not humble themselves? But their hearts were hardened all the more and Satan made all that they did seem fair to them.

When the punishment reached them from Us, why did they not learn to be humble? (But) instead, their hearts became hard, and Satan made their (sinful) actions seem likable to them.

Why did they not then, when Our punishment overtook them, grow humble? (It was for the fact that) their hearts had hardened and satan had made their deeds seem fair to them.

Why did they not entreat when Our punishment overtook them! But their hearts had hardened, and Satan had made to seem decorous to them what they had been doing.
