90. Surah Al-Balad The City

  • بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّح۪يمِ

    Bismi Allahi arrahmani arraheem

    In the name of Allah, All-Merciful, Most Merciful

  • 1.

    لَٓا اُقْسِمُ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِۙ

    La oqsimu bihatha albalad

    I swear by this city –

  • 2.

    وَاَنْتَ حِلٌّ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِۙ

    Waanta hillun bihatha albalad

    and you are resident in this city –

  • 3.

    وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَۙ

    Wawalidin wama walad

    and by a father and what he fathered,

  • 4.

    لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ ف۪ي كَبَدٍۜ

    Laqad khalaqna al-insana feekabad

    We created man in trouble.

  • 5.

    اَيَحْسَبُ اَنْ لَنْ يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ اَحَدٌۢ

    Ayahsabu an lan yaqdira AAalayhi ahad

    Does he imagine that no one has power over him?

  • 6.

    يَقُولُ اَهْلَكْتُ مَالاً لُبَداًۜ

    Yaqoolu ahlaktu malan lubada

    He says, ‘I have consumed vast quantities of wealth. ’

  • 7.

    اَيَحْسَبُ اَنْ لَمْ يَرَهُٓ اَحَدٌۜ

    Ayahsabu an lam yarahu ahad

    Does he imagine that no one has seen him?

  • 8.

    اَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ عَيْنَيْنِۙ

    Alam najAAal lahu AAaynayn

    Have We not given him two eyes,

  • 9.

    وَلِسَاناً وَشَفَتَيْنِۙ

    Walisanan washafatayn

    and a tongue and two lips

  • 10.

    وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِۚ

    Wahadaynahu annajdayn

    and shown him the two highways?

  • 11.

    فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَۘ

    Fala iqtahama alAAaqaba

    But he has not braved the steep ascent.

  • 12.

    وَمَٓا اَدْرٰيكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُۜ

    Wama adraka maalAAaqaba

    What will convey to you what the steep ascent is?

  • 13.

    فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍۙ

    Fakku raqaba

    It is freeing a slave

  • 14.

    اَوْ اِطْعَامٌ ف۪ي يَوْمٍ ذ۪ي مَسْغَبَةٍۙ

    Aw itAAamun fee yawmin theemasghaba

    or feeding on a day of hunger

  • 15.

    يَت۪يماً ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍۙ

    Yateeman tha maqraba

    an orphaned relative

  • 16.

    اَوْ مِسْك۪يناً ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍۜ

    Aw miskeenan tha matraba

    or a poor man in the dust;

  • 17.

    ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِۜ

    Thumma kana mina allatheena amanoowatawasaw bissabri watawasaw bilmarhama

    then to be one of those who have iman and urge each other to steadfastness and urge each other to compassion.

  • 18.

    اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ اَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِۜ

    Ola-ika as-habualmaymana

    Those are the Companions of the Right.

  • 19.

    وَالَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُوا بِاٰيَاتِنَا هُمْ اَصْحَابُ الْمَشْـَٔمَةِۜ

    Wallatheena kafaroo bi-ayatinahum as-habu almash-ama

    Those who reject Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left.

  • 20.

    عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُؤْصَدَةٌ

    AAalayhim narun mu/sada

    Above them is a sealed vault of Fire.
