51. Surah Adh-Dhariyat The Winnowing Winds

  • بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّح۪يمِ

    Bismi Allahi arrahmani arraheem

    In the name of Allah, All-Merciful, Most Merciful

  • 1.

    وَالذَّارِيَاتِ ذَرْواًۙ

    Waththariyati tharwa

    By the scatterers scattering,

  • 2.

    فَالْحَامِلَاتِ وِقْراًۙ

    Falhamilati wiqra

    and those bearing weighty loads,

  • 3.

    فَالْجَارِيَاتِ يُسْراًۙ

    Faljariyati yusra

    and those speeding along with ease,

  • 4.

    فَالْمُقَسِّمَاتِ اَمْراًۙ

    Falmuqassimati amra

    and those apportioning the command:

  • 5.

    اِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَصَادِقٌۙ

    Innama tooAAadoona lasadiq

    what you are promised is certainly true –

  • 6.

    وَاِنَّ الدّ۪ينَ لَوَاقِـعٌۜ

    Wa-inna addeena lawaqiAA

    the Judgement will certainly take place!

  • 7.

    وَالسَّمَٓاءِ ذَاتِ الْحُبُكِۙ

    Wassama-i thati alhubuk

    By Heaven with its oscillating orbits,

  • 8.

    اِنَّكُمْ لَف۪ي قَوْلٍ مُخْتَلِفٍۙ

    Innakum lafee qawlin mukhtalif

    you certainly have differing beliefs.

  • 9.

    يُؤْفَكُ عَنْهُ مَنْ اُفِكَۜ

    Yu/faku AAanhu man ofik

    Averted from it is he who is averted.

  • 10.

    قُتِلَ الْخَرَّاصُونَۙ

    Qutila alkharrasoon

    Death to the conjecturers:

  • 11.

    اَلَّذ۪ينَ هُمْ ف۪ي غَمْرَةٍ سَاهُونَۙ

    Allatheena hum fee ghamratin sahoon

    those who flounder in a glut of ignorance,

  • 12.

    يَسْـَٔلُونَ اَيَّانَ يَوْمُ الدّ۪ينِۜ

    Yas-aloona ayyana yawmu addeen

    asking, ‘When is the Day of Judgement?’

  • 13.

    يَوْمَ هُمْ عَلَى النَّارِ يُفْتَنُونَ

    Yawma hum AAala annariyuftanoon

    On the Day they are tormented by the Fire:

  • 14.

    ذُوقُوا فِتْنَتَكُمْۜ هٰذَا الَّذ۪ي كُنْتُمْ بِه۪ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ

    Thooqoo fitnatakum hatha allatheekuntum bihi tastaAAjiloon

    ‘Taste your torment! This is what you were trying to hasten!’

  • 15.

    اِنَّ الْمُتَّق۪ينَ ف۪ي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍۙ

    Inna almuttaqeena fee jannatinwaAAuyoon

    The people with taqwa will be among Gardens and Fountains,

  • 16.

    اٰخِذ۪ينَ مَٓا اٰتٰيهُمْ رَبُّهُمْۜ اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذٰلِكَ مُحْسِن۪ينَۜ

    Akhitheena ma atahumrabbuhum innahum kanoo qabla thalika muhsineen

    receiving what their Lord has given them. Certainly before that they were good-doers.

  • 17.

    كَانُوا قَل۪يلاً مِنَ الَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ

    Kanoo qaleelan mina allayli mayahjaAAoon

    The part of the night they spent asleep was small

  • 18.

    وَبِالْاَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ

    Wabil-ashari humyastaghfiroon

    and they would seek forgiveness before the dawn.

  • 19.

    وَف۪ٓي اَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ لِلسَّٓائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ

    Wafee amwalihim haqqun lissa-iliwalmahroom

    And beggars and the destitute received a due share of their wealth.

  • 20.

    وَفِي الْاَرْضِ اٰيَاتٌ لِلْمُوقِن۪ينَۙ

    Wafee al-ardi ayatunlilmooqineen

    There are certainly Signs in the earth for people with certainty;

  • 21.

    وَف۪ٓي اَنْفُسِكُمْۜ اَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ

    Wafee anfusikum afala tubsiroon

    and in yourselves as well. Do you not then see?

  • 22.

    وَفِي السَّمَٓاءِ رِزْقُكُمْ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ

    Wafee assama-i rizqukum wamatooAAadoon

    Your provision is in heaven – and what you are promised.

  • 23.

    فَوَرَبِّ السَّمَٓاءِ وَالْاَرْضِ اِنَّهُ لَحَقٌّ مِثْلَ مَٓا اَنَّكُمْ تَنْطِقُونَ۟

    Fawarabbi assama-i wal-ardiinnahu lahaqqun mithla ma annakum tantiqoon

    By the Lord of heaven and earth, it is certainly the truth, just as you have speech.

  • 24.

    هَلْ اَتٰيكَ حَد۪يثُ ضَيْفِ اِبْرٰه۪يمَ الْمُكْرَم۪ينَۢ

    Hal ataka hadeethu dayfiibraheema almukrameen

    Has the story reached you of the honoured guests of Ibrahim?

  • 25.

    اِذْ دَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا سَلَاماًۜ قَالَ سَلَامٌۚ قَوْمٌ مُنْكَرُونَ

    Ith dakhaloo AAalayhi faqaloosalaman qala salamun qawmun munkaroon

    When they entered his dwelling and said, ‘Peace!’ he said, ‘Peace, to people we do not know. ’

  • 26.

    فَرَاغَ اِلٰٓى اَهْلِه۪ فَجَٓاءَ بِعِجْلٍ سَم۪ينٍۙ

    Faragha ila ahlihi fajaabiAAijlin sameen

    So he slipped off to his household and brought a fattened calf.

  • 27.

    فَقَرَّبَهُٓ اِلَيْهِمْ قَالَ اَلَا تَأْكُلُونَۘ

    Faqarrabahu ilayhim qala alata/kuloon

    He offered it to them and then exclaimed, ‘Do you not then eat?’

  • 28.

    فَاَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خ۪يفَةًۜ قَالُوا لَا تَخَفْۜ وَبَشَّرُوهُ بِغُلَامٍ عَل۪يمٍ

    Faawjasa minhum kheefatan qaloo latakhaf wabashsharoohu bighulamin AAaleem

    He felt afraid of them but they said, ‘Do not be afraid!’ and gave him the good news of a son imbued with knowledge.

  • 29.

    فَاَقْبَلَتِ امْرَاَتُهُ ف۪ي صَرَّةٍ فَصَكَّتْ وَجْهَهَا وَقَالَتْ عَجُوزٌ عَق۪يمٌ

    Faaqbalati imraatuhu fee sarratin fasakkatwajhaha waqalat AAajoozun AAaqeem

    His wife came up with a shriek and struck her face and said, ‘What, and me a barren old woman!’

  • 30.

    قَالُوا كَذٰلِكِۙ قَالَ رَبُّكِۜ اِنَّهُ هُوَ الْحَك۪يمُ الْعَل۪يمُ

    Qaloo kathaliki qalarabbuki innahu huwa alhakeemu alAAaleem

    They said, ‘That is what your Lord says. He is the All-Wise, the All-Knowing.’

  • 31.

    قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ اَيُّهَا الْمُرْسَلُونَ

    Qala fama khatbukumayyuha almursaloon

    He inquired, ‘What, then, is your business, messengers?’

  • 32.

    قَالُٓوا اِنَّٓا اُرْسِلْـنَٓا اِلٰى قَوْمٍ مُجْرِم۪ينَۙ

    Qaloo inna orsilna ilaqawmin mujrimeen

    They said, ‘We have been sent to a people of evildoers

  • 33.

    لِنُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِنْ ط۪ينٍۙ

    Linursila AAalayhim hijaratanmin teen

    to unleash upon them lumps of clay

  • 34.

    مُسَوَّمَةً عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُسْرِف۪ينَ

    Musawwamatan AAinda rabbika lilmusrifeen

    earmarked by your Lord for the profligate. ’

  • 35.

    فَاَخْرَجْنَا مَنْ كَانَ ف۪يهَا مِنَ الْمُؤْمِن۪ينَۚ

    Faakhrajna man kana feehamina almu/mineen

    We brought out all the muminun who were there

  • 36.

    فَمَا وَجَدْنَا ف۪يهَا غَيْرَ بَيْتٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِم۪ينَۚ

    Fama wajadna feehaghayra baytin mina almuslimeen

    but found in it only one house of Muslims.

  • 37.

    وَتَرَكْنَا ف۪يهَٓا اٰيَةً لِلَّذ۪ينَ يَخَافُونَ الْعَذَابَ الْاَل۪يمَۜ

    Watarakna feeha ayatanlillatheena yakhafoona alAAathaba al-aleem

    And We left a Sign in it for those who fear the painful punishment.

  • 38.

    وَف۪ي مُوسٰٓى اِذْ اَرْسَلْنَاهُ اِلٰى فِرْعَوْنَ بِسُلْطَانٍ مُب۪ينٍ

    Wafee moosa ith arsanahuila firAAawna bisultanin mubeen

    And also in Musa when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.

  • 39.

    فَتَوَلّٰى بِرُكْنِه۪ وَقَالَ سَاحِرٌ اَوْ مَجْنُونٌ

    Fatawalla biruknihi waqala sahirunaw majnoon

    But he turned away with his forces, saying, ‘A magician or a madman!’

  • 40.

    فَاَخَذْنَاهُ وَجُنُودَهُ فَنَبَذْنَاهُمْ فِي الْيَمِّ وَهُوَ مُل۪يمٌۜ

    Faakhathnahu wajunoodahufanabathnahum fee alyammi wahuwa muleem

    So We seized him and his armies and hurled them into the sea, and he was to blame.

  • 41.

    وَف۪ي عَادٍ اِذْ اَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ الرّ۪يحَ الْعَق۪يمَۚ

    Wafee AAadin ith arsalnaAAalayhimu arreeha alAAaqeem

    And also in ‘Ad when We unleashed against them the barren wind,

  • 42.

    مَا تَذَرُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ اَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ اِلَّا جَعَلَتْهُ كَالرَّم۪يمِۜ

    Ma tatharu min shay-in atatAAalayhi illa jaAAalat-hu karrameem

    which left nothing it touched without turning it to dust.

  • 43.

    وَف۪ي ثَمُودَ اِذْ ق۪يلَ لَهُمْ تَمَتَّعُوا حَتّٰى ح۪ينٍ

    Wafee thamooda ith qeela lahumtamattaAAoo hatta heen

    And also in Thamud, when they were told: ‘Enjoy yourselves a while!’

  • 44.

    فَعَتَوْا عَنْ اَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ فَاَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّاعِقَةُ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ

    FaAAataw AAan amri rabbihim faakhathat-humuassaAAiqatu wahum yanthuroon

    But they spurned their Lord’s command, so the Blast seized them as they looked.

  • 45.

    فَمَا اسْتَطَاعُوا مِنْ قِيَامٍ وَمَا كَانُوا مُنْتَصِر۪ينَۙ

    Fama istataAAoo min qiyaminwama kanoo muntasireen

    They could not stand upright and they were not helped.

  • 46.

    وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِنْ قَبْلُۜ اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَوْماً فَاسِق۪ينَ۟

    Waqawma noohin min qablu innahum kanooqawman fasiqeen

    And the people of Nuh before, they were a people of deviators.

  • 47.

    وَالسَّمَٓاءَ بَنَيْنَاهَا بِاَيْدٍ وَاِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ

    Wassamaa banaynahabi-aydin wa-inna lamoosiAAoon

    As for heaven – We built it with great power and gave it its vast expanse.

  • 48.

    وَالْاَرْضَ فَرَشْنَاهَا فَنِعْمَ الْمَاهِدُونَ

    Wal-arda farashnahafaniAAma almahidoon

    And the earth – We spread it like a carpet and how well We smoothed it out!

  • 49.

    وَمِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقْنَا زَوْجَيْنِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ

    Wamin kulli shay-in khalaqna zawjaynilaAAallakum tathakkaroon

    And We created all things in pairs so that hopefully you would pay heed.

  • 50.

    فَفِرُّٓوا اِلَى اللّٰهِۜ اِنّ۪ي لَكُمْ مِنْهُ نَذ۪يرٌ مُب۪ينٌۚ

    Fafirroo ila Allahi inneelakum minhu natheerun mubeen

    So flee to Allah. Truly I bring you a clear warning from Him.

  • 51.

    وَلَا تَجْعَلُوا مَعَ اللّٰهِ اِلٰهاً اٰخَرَۜ اِنّ۪ي لَكُمْ مِنْهُ نَذ۪يرٌ مُب۪ينٌ

    Wala tajAAaloo maAAa Allahi ilahanakhara innee lakum minhu natheerun mubeen

    Do not set up another god together with Allah. Truly I bring you a clear warning from Him.

  • 52.

    كَذٰلِكَ مَٓا اَتَى الَّذ۪ينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ مِنْ رَسُولٍ اِلَّا قَالُوا سَاحِرٌ اَوْ مَجْنُونٌ

    Kathalika ma ata allatheenamin qablihim min rasoolin illa qaloo sahirunaw majnoon

    Equally, no Messenger came to those before them without their saying, ‘A magician or a madman!’

  • 53.

    اَتَوَاصَوْا بِه۪ۚ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ

    Atawasaw bihi bal hum qawmun taghoon

    Did they bequeathe this to one another? Indeed they are an unbridled people.

  • 54.

    فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَمَٓا اَنْتَ بِمَلُومٍۘ

    Fatawalla AAanhum fama anta bimaloom

    So turn away from them, for you are not to blame.

  • 55.

    وَذَكِّرْ فَاِنَّ الذِّكْرٰى تَنْفَعُ الْمُؤْمِن۪ينَ

    Wathakkir fa-inna aththikratanfaAAu almu/mineen

    And remind them, for truly the muminun benefit from being reminded.

  • 56.

    وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْاِنْسَ اِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ

    Wama khalaqtu aljinna wal-insailla liyaAAbudoon

    I only created jinn and man to worship Me.

  • 57.

    مَٓا اُر۪يدُ مِنْهُمْ مِنْ رِزْقٍ وَمَٓا اُر۪يدُ اَنْ يُطْعِمُونِ

    Ma oreedu minhum min rizqin wamaoreedu an yutAAimoon

    I do not require any provision from them and I do not require them to nourish Me.

  • 58.

    اِنَّ اللّٰهَ هُوَ الرَّزَّاقُ ذُوالْقُوَّةِ الْمَت۪ينُ

    Inna Allaha huwa arrazzaquthoo alquwwati almateen

    Truly Allah, He is the Provider, the Possessor of Strength, the Sure.

  • 59.

    فَاِنَّ لِلَّذ۪ينَ ظَلَمُوا ذَنُوباً مِثْلَ ذَنُوبِ اَصْحَابِهِمْ فَلَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونِ

    Fa-inna lillatheena thalamoothanooban mithla thanoobi as-habihimfala yastaAAjiloon

    Those who do wrong will have their due, the same as that of their friends. So they should not hurry Me!

  • 60.

    فَوَيْلٌ لِلَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ يَوْمِهِمُ الَّذ۪ي يُوعَدُونَ

    Fawaylun lillatheena kafaroo minyawmihimu allathee yooAAadoon

    Woe then to those who are kafir on account of the Day they have been promised!
