10. Surah Yunus Jonas

← 9. At-Tawbah | 11. Hud →

    Bismi Allahi arrahmani arraheem

In the name of Allah, All-Merciful, Most Merciful

  • 1.

    Alif-lam-ra tilka ayatualkitabi alhakeem

Alif Lam Ra Those are the Signs of the Wise Book.

  • 2.

Akana linnasi AAajabanan awhayna ila rajulin minhum an anthiriannasa wabashshiri allatheena amanooanna lahum qadama sidqin AAinda rabbihim qala alkafiroonainna hatha lasahirun mubeen

Do people find it so surprising that We should reveal to a man among them: ‘Warn mankind and give good news to those who have iman that they are on a sure footing with their Lord’? The kafirun say, ‘This is downright magic!’

  • 3.

Inna rabbakumu Allahu allatheekhalaqa assamawati wal-ardafee sittati ayyamin thumma istawa AAalaalAAarshi yudabbiru al-amra ma min shafeeAAin illamin baAAdi ithnihi thalikumu Allahu rabbukumfaAAbudoohu afala tathakkaroon

Your Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days and then established Himself firmly on the Throne. He directs the whole affair. No one can intercede except with His permission. That is Allah your Lord, so worship Him. Will you not pay heed?

  • 4.

Ilayhi marjiAAukum jameeAAan waAAda Allahihaqqan innahu yabdao alkhalqa thumma yuAAeeduhu liyajziyaallatheena amanoo waAAamiloo assalihatibilqisti wallatheena kafaroo lahumsharabun min hameemin waAAathabun aleemunbima kanoo yakfuroon

Each and every one of you will return to Him. Allah’s promise is true. He brings creation out of nothing and then regenerates it so that he can repay with justice those who had iman and did right actions. Those who were kafir will have a drink of scalding water and a painful punishment because of their kufr.

  • 5.

Huwa allathee jaAAala ashshamsadiyaan walqamara nooran waqaddarahu manazilalitaAAlamoo AAadada assineena walhisabama khalaqa Allahu thalika illa bilhaqqiyufassilu al-ayati liqawmin yaAAlamoon

It is He who appointed the sun to give radiance, and the moon to give light, assigning it phases so you would know the number of years and the reckoning of time. Allah did not create these things except with truth. We make the Signs clear for people who know.

  • 6.

Inna fee ikhtilafi allayli wannahariwama khalaqa Allahu fee assamawatiwal-ardi laayatin liqawmin yattaqoon

In the alternation of night and day and what Allah has created in the heavens and the earth there are Signs for people who have taqwa.

  • 7.

Inna allatheena la yarjoona liqaanawaradoo bilhayati addunyawatmaannoo biha wallatheenahum AAan ayatina ghafiloon

As for those who do not expect to meet Us and are content with the life of the dunya and at rest in it, and those who are heedless of Our Signs,

  • 8.

    Ola-ika ma/wahumu annarubima kanoo yaksiboon

their shelter will be the Fire because of what they earned.

  • 9.

Inna allatheena amanoowaAAamiloo assalihati yahdeehim rabbuhumbi-eemanihim tajree min tahtihimu al-anharufee jannati annaAAeem

But as for those who have iman and do right actions, their Lord will guide them by their iman. Rivers will flow under them in Gardens of Delight.

  • 10.

DaAAwahum feeha subhanakaallahumma watahiyyatuhum feeha salamunwaakhiru daAAwahum ani alhamdu lillahirabbi alAAalameen

Their call there is: ‘Glory be to You, O Allah!’ Their greeting there is: ‘Peace!’ The end of their call is: ‘Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds!’

  • 11.

Walaw yuAAajjilu Allahu linnasiashsharra istiAAjalahum bilkhayri laqudiyailayhim ajaluhum fanatharu allatheena layarjoona liqaana fee tughyanihimyaAAmahoon

If Allah were to hasten evil for people the way they try to hasten good, their term would already have been completed for them. We abandon those who do not expect to meet Us to wander blindly in their excessive insolence.

  • 12.

Wa-itha massa al-insana addurrudaAAana lijanbihi aw qaAAidan aw qa-imanfalamma kashafna AAanhu durrahu marra kaanlam yadAAuna ila durrin massahu kathalikazuyyina lilmusrifeena ma kanoo yaAAmaloon

When harm touches man, he calls on Us, lying on his side or sitting down or standing up. Then when We remove the harm from him he carries on as if he had never called on Us when the harm first touched him. In that way We make what they have done appear good to the profligate.

  • 13.

Walaqad ahlakna alquroona minqablikum lamma thalamoo wajaat-humrusuluhum bilbayyinati wama kanooliyu/minoo kathalika najzee alqawma almujrimeen

We destroyed generations before you when they did wrong. Their Messengers brought them the Clear Signs, but they were never going to have iman. That is how We repay evildoers.

  • 14.

Thumma jaAAalnakum khala-ifafee al-ardi min baAAdihim linanthura kayfataAAmaloon

Then We appointed you after them to be khalifs on the earth so We might observe how you would act.

  • 15.

Wa-itha tutla AAalayhim ayatunabayyinatin qala allatheena layarjoona liqaana i/ti biqur-anin ghayri hathaaw baddilhu qul ma yakoonu lee an obaddilahu min tilqa-inafsee in attabiAAu illa ma yooha ilayyainnee akhafu in AAasaytu rabbee AAathabayawmin AAatheem

When Our Clear Signs are recited to them, those who do not expect to meet Us say, ‘Bring a Qur’an other than this one or change it. ’ Say: ‘It is not for me to change it of my own accord. I follow nothing except what is revealed to me. I fear, were I to disobey my Lord, the punishment of a Dreadful Day.’

  • 16.

Qul law shaa Allahu matalawtuhu AAalaykum wala adrakum bihi faqadlabithtu feekum AAumuran min qablihi afala taAAqiloon

Say: ‘Had Allah so wished, I would not have recited it to you nor would He have made it known to you. I lived among you for many years before it came. Will you not use your intellect?’

  • 17.

Faman athlamu mimmani iftaraAAala Allahi kathiban aw kaththababi-ayatihi innahu la yuflihualmujrimoon

Who could do greater wrong than someone who invents lies against Allah or denies His Signs? Evildoers are certainly not successful.

  • 18.

WayaAAbudoona min dooni Allahi mala yadurruhum wala yanfaAAuhum wayaqooloonahaola-i shufaAAaona AAinda Allahiqul atunabbi-oona Allaha bima la yaAAlamufee assamawati wala fee al-ardisubhanahu wataAAala AAamma yushrikoon

They worship, instead of Allah, what can neither harm them nor help them, saying, ‘These are our intercessors with Allah. ’ Say: ‘Would you inform Allah of something about which He does not know either in the heavens or on the earth?’ May He be glorified and exalted above what they associate with Him!

  • 19.

Wama kana annasuilla ommatan wahidatan fakhtalafoo walawlakalimatun sabaqat min rabbika laqudiya baynahum feemafeehi yakhtalifoon

Mankind was only one community but then they differed, and had it not been for a prior Word from your Lord, they would already have been judged in respect of the differences between them.

  • 20.

Wayaqooloona lawla onzila AAalayhi ayatunmin rabbihi faqul innama alghaybu lillahi fantathirooinnee maAAakum mina almuntathireen

They say, ‘Why has a Sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?’ Say: ‘The Unseen belongs to Allah alone. So wait, I am waiting with you.’

  • 21.

Wa-itha athaqna annasarahmatan min baAAdi darraa massat-hum ithalahum makrun fee ayatina quli AllahuasraAAu makran inna rusulana yaktuboona matamkuroon

When We let people taste mercy after hardship has afflicted them, immediately they plot against Our Signs. Say: ‘Allah is swifter at plotting.’ Your plotting is recorded by Our messengers.

  • 22.

Huwa allathee yusayyirukum feealbarri walbahri hatta ithakuntum fee alfulki wajarayna bihim bireehin tayyibatinwafarihoo biha jaat-ha reehunAAasifun wajaahumu almawju min kulli makaninwathannoo annahum oheeta bihimdaAAawoo Allaha mukhliseena lahu addeenala-in anjaytana min hathihi lanakoonanna mina ashshakireen

It is He who conveys you on both land and sea so that when some of you are on a boat, running before a fair wind, rejoicing at it, and then a violent squall comes upon them and the waves come at them from every side and they realise there is no way of escape, they call on Allah, making their deen sincerely His: ‘If You rescue us from this, we will truly be among the thankful. ’

  • 23.

Falamma anjahum ithahum yabghoona fee al-ardi bighayri alhaqqi yaayyuha annasu innama baghyukum AAalaanfusikum mataAAa alhayati addunyathumma ilayna marjiAAukum fanunabbi-okum bimakuntum taAAmaloon

But then, when He does rescue them, they become rebellious in the earth without any right to do so. Mankind, your rebelliousness is only against yourselves. There is the enjoyment of the life of this world and then you will return to Us and We will inform you about what you did.

  • 24.

Innama mathalu alhayatiaddunya kama-in anzalnahu mina assama-ifakhtalata bihi nabatu al-ardi mimmaya/kulu annasu wal-anAAamu hattaitha akhathati al-ardu zukhrufaha wazzayyanatwathanna ahluha annahum qadiroonaAAalayha ataha amruna laylan aw naharanfajaAAalnaha haseedan kaan lam taghnabil-amsi kathalika nufassilu al-ayatiliqawmin yatafakkaroon

The metaphor of the life of this world is that of water which We send down from the sky, and which then mingles with the plants of the earth to provide food for both people and animals. Then, when the earth is at its loveliest and takes on its fairest guise and its people think they have it under their control, Our command comes upon it by night or day and We reduce it to dried-out stubble, as though it had not been flourishing just the day before! In this way We make Our Signs clear for people who reflect.

  • 25.

Wallahu yadAAoo ila dariassalami wayahdee man yashao ila siratinmustaqeem

Allah calls to the Abode of Peace and He guides whom He wills to a straight path.

  • 26.

Lillatheena ahsanoo alhusnawaziyadatun wala yarhaqu wujoohahum qatarun walathillatun ola-ika as-habu aljannatihum feeha khalidoon

Those who do good will have the best and more! Neither dust nor debasement will darken their faces. They are the Companions of the Garden, remaining in it timelessly, for ever.

  • 27.

But as for those who have earned bad actions – a bad action will be repaid with one the like of it. Debasement will darken them. They will have no one to protect them from Allah. It is as if their faces were covered by dark patches of the night. Those are the Companions of the Fire, remaining in it timelessly, for ever.

  • 28.

Wayawma nahshuruhum jameeAAan thummanaqoolu lillatheena ashrakoo makanakum antumwashurakaokum fazayyalna baynahum waqalashurakaohum ma kuntum iyyanataAAbudoon

On the Day We gather them all together, We will say then to those who associated others with Allah, ‘To your place, you and your partner-gods!’ Then We will sift them out, and their partner-gods will say, ‘It was not us you worshipped.

  • 29.

Fakafa billahishaheedan baynana wabaynakum in kunna AAan AAibadatikumlaghafileen

Allah is a sufficient witness between us and you. We were unaware of your worship.’

  • 30.

Hunalika tabloo kullu nafsin maaslafat waruddoo ila Allahi mawlahumu alhaqqiwadalla AAanhum ma kanoo yaftaroon

Then and there every self will be tried for what it did before. They will be returned to Allah, their Master, the Real, and what they invented will abandon them.

  • 31.

Say: ‘Who provides for you out of heaven and earth? Who controls hearing and sight? Who brings forth the living from the dead and the dead from the living? Who directs the whole affair?’ They will say, ‘Allah. ’ Say, ‘So will you not have taqwa?’

  • 32.

Fathalikumu Allahu rabbukumualhaqqu famatha baAAda alhaqqi illa addalalufaanna tusrafoon

That is Allah, your Lord, the Truth, and what is there after truth except misguidance? So how have you been distracted?

  • 33.
